When loading W2000 Professional, the logon completes
without a hitch. The Desktop fails to load and leaves
only a blue screen. When starting in 'Safe Mode', the
same thing occurs. ('Safe Mode' appears normal.) I
followed the procedure suggested by the Knowledge Base
about renaming a file. That didn't work.

What next?

Thanks Pegasus!

I have tried to use the procedure in the Knowledge Base (#256194). I get
an error message at start-up and the error message says it cannot locate
'Shdocvw.dll'.

Is Microsofe suggesting that you rename ALL the files in article
#256194? Or, do I just need to re-install Windows?

I have never tried this process, so I cannot give you any further
information on the KB item.

If the hints in the KB article fail to fix the problem then I would
take the following steps, one at a time, until the problem is fixed:
- Run sfc.exe (System File Checker)
- Boot with the Win2000 CD and select Repair when prompted.
- Boot with the Win2000 CD and re-install Win2000 over the top
of the existing installation. This should preserver your existing
settings.

In all cases you probably have to re-apply the latest Service Pack.

Maybe it's time to change your virus scanner. It should
have detected the virus on the first pass!
