It's a brand new XP SP2 system with an AMD64 proc. Everything runs great
until I try to install either Zone Alarm or Norton Internet Security. As
soon as I do the desktop disappears and only comes back for ~10sec after
reboot.

Does this have anything to do with the EVP installed on the AMD64
processors? Or do I just need to turn Windows Firewall off and change the
security settings to medium or low? Then, how do I get to my Control Panel
without a desktop? I can pull up the Task Manager and how do I get it to
Find: 'Control Panel'

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

To Open Control Panel...
Start | Run | Type: control | Click OK
or
From Task Manager
File | New Task (Run...) | Type: control | Click OK
or
Hit Windows key + R to open the Run box |
Type: control | Click OK

Do not run two firewalls, this can cause problems. Use either XP's or
ZoneAlarm, not both. Do not run three or you're really asking for problems.

Do not run two AV programs, this can cause problems. Use either Norton or
ZoneAlarm, not both.

Norton sucks.
