Running a Dell Latitude CPt V466GT w/W2K/SP4. When loading a DVD into my
CD-ROM Drive I am suddenly receiving the Error Message from Desktop of
"Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied". MS Support has
several articles on this error message, but none that pertain specifically
to my situation.

The DVD application is WinDVD Platinum 5.0. For the record, have been have
problems in attempting to get this application to run - at all, and am
working with an InterVideo Technician to identify and resolve the
problem(s), which may or may not relate to the Error message.

An explanation of the nature of the error message, and possible corrective
action(s)), would be appreciated.

A DVD will not be accessible to a CD-ROM drive. You will get an error
message, either like the one you are getting, or "Please insert a disk in
drive X:". Put the DVD in a DVD-ROM drive.

Ken, my apoligies. I should have been more specific. The drive is a
CD-ROM/DVD Drive.

OK, so it is a legitimate problem! Is the problem with all disks? Just
DVDs? All DVDs, but not CDs? Just for kicks, try sharing the drive and
accessing it from another computer. Maybe the user you are logged in as does
not have permission to use the drive? Have you tried accessing it from a Run
command, as opposed to "My Computer"? You mentioned that you're having
trouble with WinDVD...can you access the drive from another application,
such as Windows Media Player, or other DVD software?

Ken, good suggestions. Unfortunately, none clear the problem.

A music CD produces the same error.

Unable to access from another computer, as none available.

Am logged in as an Administrator.

Accessing it from Windows Media Player (V9.0) causes the same error message.

Unable to access the WinDVD.exe file using "Run" command - possible error on
my part there, but the command format is correct to the best of my knowledge
(Run "C:\Program files\InterVideo\DVD5\WinDVD.exe").

Brian, thanks for the clarification. Answer is, yes, I can.
When you go to run > "D:\", you can access the drive. By this, you mean that
Explorer works fine and you can access the files alright?

If that's the case, then unfortunately I don't have any further suggestions,
other than to keep doing that as a workaround until you do get an answer.
This still doesn't solve the problem of your WinDVD not running properly, or
music CDs not playing in WMP. Have you tried reinstalling WinDVD? I don't
see how that would solve the problem of WMP not being able to access the
drive, but I guess it might help towards figuring out if it's a problem with
the drive or with the software/OS.
