Desktop effects keep coming back

I cannot get a preference for "no animation" on the desktop to stick.

Under Desktop/properties/appearance/effects

"Use the following transition effect for menu and tooltips:" is always
checked upon rebooting the machine. The check mark is dim - but not
greyed out - in the sense that it can't be changed.

I un-check it, and program windows stop swooping to the bottom of the
screen - but only for the duration of the session. Reboot, and there
they go again.

I've tried every fix mentioned in this group, and on three or four
"expert" websites (thanks to you all for the stuff that *does work for
me), to no avail.

I'm on the machine as "owner" -- there are no other logins. Any ideas
out there?

To make it stick, you need to uncheck "Fade or slide menus into view" at
this location:
1.Access system properties from control panel or Run sysdm.cpl
2.Click on Advanced tab and under Performance click on Settings
3.Apply and OK your selection

Eddy -- Thanks for your response -- but that's one of the things I've
already tried. I'm thinking that the "partly greyed out" angle might
mean something - but I've seen no reference to anything like that when
perusing the various XP lists.

Or perhaps because I'm on the machine as "Owner", and require no
password, etc., to get into Windows, it's not loading a set of
preferences for a user - just a default for Owner. Haven't tried to
set up another user (me) to see if that does the trick.

Did download a small program that can automate varous procedures on
the desktop - including mouse movements and clicks. Thought I could
load it in the Startup group to take care of my problem for me. The
program works like a charm -- problem is, the desktop "preferences"
window opens in a different spot on the screen each time.

Sigh.

One last try, ken.
Access the Advanced tab under My Computer's properties...and under Visual
Effects, choose custom and uncheck the first 4 entries dealimg with
animating and fading and see if it sticks.

Eddy,

Those items have been un-checked since day one of this little exercise
in futility. I've checked them (with the expected results) then
unchecked, with the same results. Whatever I do, the damned swoosh
can't be killed. Guess I'll have to learn to live with it.

Then there's Win XP's inability to deal with two different scanners on
USB connections. Win 98 handled them no problem (!).

The grayed out item may be a clue. My display driver has some fancy extras
that include animation/fade choices. Perhaps you have something similar and
it is adding the check in the Windows settings screens. Maybe you can't
change it here because you need to change it somewhere else? A
configuration screen for.... (no idea what you have installed that it could
belong to, you'll have to check).
