Greetings

Unfortunately, none of use have any idea way this is happening. Here are a
few suggestions on how you can try and fix it.

There is a very good chance this is being caused by a virus.

Reboot Windows XP into Safe Mode
--How to start Windows XP in Safe mode--
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039

1) Goto Start>>Run>>Type "regedit"
2) Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and delete
"Explorer %SYSTEM%\Explorer.exe"
3) Reboot your PC as normal.

If that doesnt work...

Reboot Windows XP into Safe Mode
--How to start Windows XP in Safe mode--
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001060608000039

1) Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32. Search in the
System32 directory for "explore.exe" or "explorer.exe" If the file exists
delete it.
2) Goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and scan your either system for
virus.
3) Reboot your PC.

NOTE: Do NOT delete "explorer.exe" from your C:\Windows directory!

You may try the following if you don't boot into Safe Mode.

1) Press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC
2) Goto the Applications Tab
3) Click New Task...
4) Type "C:\Windows\explorer.exe", hit Enter
5) Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32. Search in the
System32 directory for "explore.exe" or "explorer.exe" If the file exists
delete it.

NOTE: Do NOT delete "explorer.exe" from your C:\Windows directory!

Also try a virus scan to clean things up.
1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Goto http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and scan your either system for
virus.
3) Reboot your PC and see if you now have a desktop.

i had this prolem and have posted a topic, not sure if it
has appeared at this time.
if you still have this problem, on the windows task
manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) end the "sysu.exe" as this was my
problem. COULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THIS DOES AS
NOW I HAVE DELETED IT!! please email me.

i have found out what happened well for me. its the
folder C:\Programs\ddm causing the problem its adware
so i deleted it to. problem solved. hope it is for you
too :)

I don't have a sysu.exe file running, nor do I have a ddm
directory. I also don't appear to have the virus
mentioned in other posts.

All I have is the System Idle Process hitting the
processor at 99% and nothing else.

Any other ideas?

I have also tried running system restore from the cmd
prompt (I get a blank system restore window).

Explorer.exe is not running.

Hi Jim,

You need to end process on explorer.exe and then rerun it via the Task
Manager.

If you have Pro type in a command prompt

tasklist /m >"%userprofile%\desktop\module.txt" and post the file that appears on your desktop

I hope you mean tasklist.

Does typing msinfo32 in File Rum - Software - Loaded Modules help

On the Process tab of Task Manager list what you have (ignore the following standard ones - make typing easy). If you see sysu.exe there select it and press Delete but continue with the instructions..
