Two weeks ago my computer crashed and I lost a lot of
files to fragmentation (although my computer was not
fragmented very much). I defragged my hard drive then two
days later my computer crashed again. Again a lot of .chk
files were created. This time, however, my problem is
that my desktop won't display. When I boot up my
computer, the image that displays on my desktop appears
but non of my desktop icons are there and the task bar and
start button are not there. The only way I can access
files on my computer is through the task manager. The
folder with the desktop information in it is still there
but nothing displays. Does anyone know how I recover from
this???

Sounds like you are having some file system problems or maybe even
physical drive problems. When the crash occurs what exactly happens? I
would start with 2 things which you can do from task manager.

chkdsk /r and reboot
sfc /scannow
