I deleted some icons I did not want. I am not sure what I did. I would like
to undo it. I don't understand the desktop stuff. Now I have files posted
on the desktop and must access the Start menu to launch any program. Any
help will be greatly appreciated.

You can put the icon shortcuts back on your desktop by highlighting the
program, right click it and select 'send to' desktop. OR, better yet, just
do a system restore to the earliest point before you removed the icons.
Not sure what you are talking about when you say you have 'files posted on
the desktop' What files? How did they get there?

Immediately after such a slip, you can press Ctrl/Z to undo the last
faux pas. If you always delete to the Recycle Bin, you can open it and
restore the deleted items. Don't empty the Recycle Bin; let it build up
till older deletions are removed to make way for newer ones.
