Desktop connection breaks server connection !

Hi all !

I have a very strange problem here !
I have a Win2000 server running Active Directory, with more or less 10
workstations (all running WinXP Pro).

When I plug-in one of my workstation to the network, the server stops
responding for 5 or 10 seconds. It is totally unreachable from anywhere in
the network !
Only one of my desktops behaves like that, but its hardware configuration is
not unique : Asus K8N motherboard (I use the integrated NIC interface). I
have 3 other computers with this MB, also connecting through the integrated
NIC.

If I check the logs on my server, I see absolutely nothing special. Nothing
in the event log, and the DHCP log has an entry for this computer :
11,11/03/05,10:29:23,Renew,10.0.0.3,mycomputer.mydns.com,00E018998877
11,11/03/05,10:31:45,Renew,10.0.0.3,,00E018998877

I have two different lines, because the first one was a connection attempt
while Windows was running, and the second one was a connection attempt at
boot-time, using the NIC's network boot ROM.
As you can see, in both situation, an IP address is leased.

The computer has been working fine for some time. The only that I changed is
the BIOS.
I flashed this computer's BIOS (and the 2 other K8N BIOS as well), and I
think that the problem started after that. I then reflashed the BIOS
(downgraded to an older BIOS, reupgraded to the latest, it never changed
anything).

Note that I tried with different cables, and I also connected another
computer on this cable without any problem.

The problem cannot lie within WinXP, because it also occurs when booting
from LAN.
The problem is not in the cable.

I sent the computer for repair (it had anothter problem), and they told me
that the NIC was running fine ! And I do agree with that : the NIC runs fine,
but it breaks my server's connection avery time the computer is plugged into
the network !

Of course, the consequences can be disastrous : we use Access databases
through the network, and any discontinuation in the connection is a loss of
data !

Can someone help me on this, I'm totally lost !!!

Thanks a lot !

I would plug in a network adapter card to see if it makes any difference.

Unfortunately, I don't have one ...
I only have embedded network cards ...

Go to the nearest computer shop and buy one.
They cost very little. If you're responsible for
a network then you should keep some spares
at all times - you might need one urgently on a
Saturday night.

I have spare computers ;)
I'll try with another card anyway.
What if it works with that card ? Can I send the MB for a repair ?

You probably could. I tend to take the pragmatic view:
If it works with an adapter card then I would ask the
supplier to give me one free of charge.
