I downloaded the beta anti-spyware programs though
microsoft's website, but after running the scans, I still
cannot get back my desktop background. It keeps flashing
different shades of white as though there is some
conflict going on. help!

Try doing a System Restore, Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
System Restore, choose a point before this started happening.

Silver bullet.. Heheh..

But ya you could try that and then do a scan in Safemode
instead. Use Task Manager to get to System Restore if
you have to (Cntrl Alt Del) and go to File, New Task, and
browse to \Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe. Most
likely it would be found on your C drive but whatever
drive your Windows is installed on go from there. Of
course only do this if you do not have a taskbar/start
button.

I have the same problem and internet explorer keeps going
to this site and I cannot change it. It tells me I have
an infected computer and about 20 links pop up with
spyware advertising. EVERYTIME. I have to go through
AOL to get this to work.

I tried what you said for the background and this came up.

rstrui.exe- Entry Point Not Found
the procedure entry point remoteassistancerestoresystem
could not be located in the repair link library WINSTA.dll
