desktop background does not display a picture

Although I have set my desktop background to the buit-in 'bliss' picture, it
remains entirely black. The odd thing is that upon adding one or more
folders/files to the desktop, the 'bliss' picture does appear. In this
scenario, the background color of the text portion of the icon for each
folder/file on the desktop appears black instead of transparent.

What could be the cause of this? How can i get the desktop background to
always be 'bliss' and the icons to show text with a transparent background
color.

nevermind... just saw someone else's posting and the solution worked for me!
