How are the cable modem/router connected to your "network?"

cable to cable modem then cable modem to internet port on router then port 1

Have you consdered checking for any possible router software upgrades
(aka firmware?) If your router's manufacturer published a firmware
update, this "might" fix your problem. However, be warned, you need
to following the upgrade direction included with the "possible"
firmware update. This usually includes directions of not installing
this update over the wireless part of the router.

I have the latest firmware

What are you doing every day when your computers get sluggish and slow? Maybe
downloading? Doing Torrents? What is "sluggish and slow"? The Internet
service? The router? The computers? Which do you use more - the desktop or
laptop? How much slower does the laptop get?

Linksys routers have bad power supplies sometimes, and this will be noticeable
when the weather is hot.

What do you unplug, to recover from the problem? The power, or the network,
cables?? Always on both the modem and the router? Do one first, and test for
solution. Next time, do the other first, and test. Try to narrow down the
problem to either the modem OR the router.

Have you tried pinging, to see if you can correlate a ping problem to the
symptom?

Also, look at your DNS setup when you observe the problem.
