I was forced to do a non destructive system restore, but
now I am getting multiple error messages that say things
like "can not find desktop.html file" and "you can not
access C:\documents and settings\desktop"

I basicall have no way to get to the files and folders I
had on my desktop. Even if I use Windows Explorer.

Help Please!

You need to take ownership of the old user profile folders. You can also
restore your old files to the new profile with information in the second
