Desktop access taking too long after boot up

J

Jim

Although my XP Pro boot sequence is fairly quick, once the desktop appears I
can't access the Start menu (hour glass running) for about a minute.

I looked at msconfig and cleared out all backround tasks.

Suggestions please.

TIA

Open Task Manager to the Processes tab, set the processes to appear in
decreasing order of CPU usage, and see what process occupies most of the
CPU resources.

Hi Jim,

Follow Leonard Grey's suggestion, plus are you mapping any External Hard
Drives to the Operating system at boot? Is the computer, Wired or Wireless?

In the Processes window I see these services at the beginning and cpu
approching 75-100%

wuaudit
clientinfo
calmain
alg - this one is sometimes a top of list

No external HD but two internal - xp on one, Windows 7 on second

no wireless

One more item I should mention - I do have a master boot record error (MBR 3
ERROR) on bootup which I've had for quite some time. I don't think that's
causing my current problem. I just felt uncomfortable messing with my mbr.

To open Task Manager, press CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Click on the Processes tab.

Click on the word CPU at the top of the CPU column. Click again to
display the processes in decreasing order of CPU usage.

Drag Task Manager to a corner of your monitor. It will remain on top of
all other windows, so you can check it at any time.
