In the last 3 years I have lost 5 Deskstars. I think the manufacturer
actually swapped two of them with me as Hitachis. Each one started with an
occasional little squeal. Then, one day, it just shut down. My last one,
number 6, is periodically squealing. Maybe some sort of sleep actuation. But
I doubt it. I think it's going to crash on me again. I did the advanced
tests on it. What do you guys and gals think?

That you're nuts for still running 3 year old Deskstars.
Get in touch with IBM and see what they'll do for you, and backup your
data, plan on a replacement one way or another... Properly working drives
do not squeal.

Yep. Its the drive recalibrating that you're hearing.

They aint called DeathStars for nothing.

That obscenity has generated a full class action suit.

I'd just bin it and replace it with a better drive.

Are these 75GXPs, there was a serious design defect in that drive? I
stopped using IBM (now Hitachi) drives years ago. You should also avoid
Maxtor which I've found to be consistantly unreliable. Get some new
Western Digital or Seagate drives. Forget about the warranty on the IBMs,
as you've already found out all your doing is replacing a failed drive
with a drive that's going to fail in a few months.

IBM is involved in a large suit over the high failure rates of their
Deskstar drives. You couldn't give me one!
