While trying to install a HP deskjet 9800 on xp home I get this error
message...
"the hp deskjet 9800 series setup program has encountered a severe error and
will now exit. Restart your computer and run setup again." Of course that
does no good. I have deleted all files pertaining to my old printer. I have
used HP's scrubber. I have tried installing the software with and without
the printer plugged in. Nothing seems to work. HELP!!!
Thank you.

I've had some similar problems with HP DeskJet install software,
although not specifically with the 9800. Here are a few things to try
(do not connect the printer until the s/w asks you to do so).

1. Turn off *all* antivirus and antispyware applications before you run
the setup.
If that doesn't work, then
2. Try running the setup in Safe Mode. If you will need to access your
local network, use "Safe Mode with Networking." If you connect to the
Internet through a router, you'll be OK. If you connect directly,
disconnect from the Internet before running in Safe Mode with Networking.
If that doesn't work, then
3. Try installing the printer driver only -- without all of HP's other
bloated software. Use the Add Printer Wizard, and if you can't figure
out where on the CD the driver (only) is located, go here:

If you don't trust TinyURLs, this is the same thing:
