All of a sudden (it seems, but I'm not sure) blues and yellows
are not being printed. So all I get is this really bland sort
of fuschia/pink color.

I've gone through HP support and all their web pages and can't
find anything wrong in software or hardware.

The cartridges are both new. I changed them after the problem
started, just to be sure they weren't the problem.

I have recently installed XP (using Partition Magic 8.0) in its
own partition, but I don't think this is the problem. I also
have my old Windows 98SE still in its own partition as well, and
it also doesn't print right.

I suppose the printer may just be broken, but does anyone have
any ideas on how to fix this? Print quality is still excellent
and it had been working flawlessly.

Thanks.

Most likely you have old cartridges. Check the "install by" date on the
package, or check the warranty date on the cartridge at:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bua02014 .

I would guess you have cartridges that are well past their shelf life. If the
cartridges are still in warranty contact HP or your dealer for a replacement.
If the cartridges are beyond the warranty period get new fresh cartridges. I
would look for cartridges with at least six months remaining before the
"install by" date.

Bob,

You may very well be right. The date is 20021202. The "new"
cartridge I put in to troubleshoot the problem is from the
same batch as the one I had in there.

Thanks for the info, but it sure does piss me off. I planned
ahead and bought several cartridges. The outside packaging is
gone so I can't look at it but I sure don't remember seeing an
expiration date on it. I'm looking at my B&W box and it for
sure doesn't have one, but then again there doesn't seem to be
one on the cartridge itself either. I guess this only applies
to color.

Now I have to buy ANOTHER cartridge just to find out if that
indeed is the problem.

Thanks, though. And I do hope you're right.

If you have an HP cartridge it will have an "install by" date on the package.
The #45 black cartridge has this on the back side of the package in the lower
right part, it says "install before". Your color cartridges were built in 2000
and are well beyond their shelf life. A new cartridge should solve your
problem.
