Take a look at these articles:

Restore Missing Show Desktop Icon to Quick Launch

Restore the Show Desktop icon to Quick Launch bar

Here's the manual fix:

How to re-create the Show Desktop icon on the Quick Launch bar

Good luck

Do you have the Quick Launch toolbar turned on? That's a default
shortcut on that toolbar. Right click on a blank area of the task bar to
see a context menu that allows you to select what tool bars are visible
on the task bar.

Don't forget about the ability to type "d" while holding down the
Windows logo key (usually outboard of the ALT keys).

I assume that, by the "lower left side of the task bar," you mean the Quick
Launch Bar, and that, by "the desktop shortcut icon," you mean the Show
Desktop shortcut.

Create a text file in Notepad as follows:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Save it as Show Desktop.scf then drag it to the Quick launch bar.
Or just click on this link:

Restore/Add Show Desktop to Quick Launch (Line 61)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Also note that you can do this with a keyboard shortcut: instead of the
shortcut: the combination of the Windows key + D or the Windows key + M.

If that's not what you want to do, please clarify.

You don't need a button if you are willing to click twice. 'Right click'
just to the right of the 'Start' button and choose 'Show the Desktop. To
restore the windows, click in the same place and choose 'Show Open Windows'.

Or you could choose one of the suggestions in the other replies to your post
(just not the toll-free number spam offer.)

1. right-click on desktop, choose NEW, TEXT DOCUMENT
2. Open TEXT DOCUMENT
3. Copy and paste (Or type carefully) the following.

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

4. Save the file.
5. Close file. Rename file to "Desktop.scf". If you did eveything OK the
icon should chang to the Show Desktop icon.
6. Move this shortcup into the Quick Launch.
