I am currently using Java for software development, but I am looking into
other development platforms. AFAICT Microsoft are pushing window developers
to .Net ; however a lot of end users may not have the .Net runtime. I was
wondering:
* What (approximately) percentage of end users already have the .Net runtime?
* Is the .Net runtime being included with new releases of Windows and other
such products?
* What steps are Microsoft taking to ensure users have the .Net runtime?

I ask these questions because downloading the .Net runtime on 56K modem
connection will take roughly an hour. And therefore if it is reasonable to
except the user to download the runtime if they don't already have it.

Here's some details:

Thanks for the link.
You're right that .NET can take a while to download but you can also package
the redistributable with your application on CD or DVD:

Yeah, for CD/DVD deployment it is not much of a problem. I was just thinking
of web downloads.
I suspect the distribution of .NET won't be as much of an issue over the
next year as Microsoft releases WinFX.

Except not all users are switching to lastest OS. I still see windows 98 in
SME.
