RIS/Desktop Deployment is free with Windows Server...

Are you UPGRADING or installing fresh?

Other options might include something like:
http://unattended.msfn.org/ (customize a CD/DVD to do everything for you...)
http://unattended.sourceforge.net/ (customize a net-bootable method...)

is RIS still around or is it called Desktop Deployment? is it free with 2003
server/2000 server. any info on how i go about using it? i dont want to use a
CD. id rather be able to upgrade from share folder/image. or the user get it
from a shared folder

i am upgrading the desktops from 2000. ill check out the links you sent me
but was wondering if you have had success with these methods in the links.

thanks very much

Try checking out Windows Deployment Services, its the successor to
RIS, i have been suing it and is pretty useful, although designed
for VISTA you can do XP, try this guide;

is this something that comes with XP/2000Server/2003Server?
Server 2003 SP2 the instructions tell you everything you need to
get it going

so this is not included with 2000 server? only 2003 server?

Going to be managing some sort of IT infrastructure? Using tools to
install/manage software? Better learn this now... ;-)

Search using Google!

(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Example:
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/servermanager/windowsdeploymentservices.mspx

"Windows Deployment Services, the updated and redesigned version of Remote
Installation Services (RIS), enables you to remotely deploy Windows
operating systems, particularly Windows Vista. You can use Windows
Deployment Services to reimage computers using customized images."

http://technet2.microsoft.com/Windo...5eb9-42f1-95ae-490e5d7a55511033.mspx?mfr=true

"Remote Installation Services (RIS) is an optional component that is
included in the Microsoft® Windows Server 2003T family operating systems.
You can use RIS to create installation images of operating systems or of
complete computer configurations, including desktop settings and
applications. You can then make these installation images available to users
at client computers."
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/desktopdeployment/default.aspx

"MDT 2008 is the next version of Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007. The
fourth generation deployment accelerator adds integration with recently
released Microsoft deployment technologies to create a single path for image
creation and automated installation of desktops and servers."

wow. thanks for that information. you actually made me feel good about this
whole thing since i had already visited everyone one of those links you sent
me. it shows that i have done my due diligence but i know that this group
always has some more good stuff that i havent seen. thanks again

Always a good thing to throw stuff you're not sure about in here as an
ask even after doing the research. You might potentially find out the
reality of what someone has gone through in the past, as opposed to what
a white paper will tell you about the theoretical ease of using a system.

We just use Altiris, takes most of the pain out of deployment, but it's
not cheap at all.

exactly my thoughts

thanks
