Trying to deploy SUS client through GP... Package
installs fine to machines that need the client. However
for machines that don't need it (e.g. post w2k/sp2 and
xp/sp1), GP tries to install the app unsuccessfully every
time the machine boots. This creates some very slow
network logons for folks on the WAN. Here's the error I
get (one of many in the client app log):

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10000
Date: 6/1/2004
Time: 1:46:55 PM
User: N/A
Computer: [ComputerNameHere]
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 10000 ) in Source (
MsiInstaller ) cannot be found. The local computer may not
have the necessary registry information or message DLL
files to display messages from a remote computer. You may
be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The
following information is part of the event: Product:
Microsoft Windows Update Auto Update -- Microsoft Windows
Update Auto Update requires Windows 2000 SP2 or Windows
XP., (NULL), (NULL), (NULL), (NULL), (NULL), (NULL).

------------

Obviously this is to be expected because the client is not
needed on these newer machines so the install fails. But
is there a way that I can change the MSI or application of
the GP so that it won't try to load the package on every
startup if it fails the first time? It's clogging up our
WAN.. TIA, Chuck

You could move to newer SPs into their own OU. This would
not solve the issue but it would stop the GP from trying
to apply WU when it does not need to.
