Hello,

Is it normal that Data Execution Prevention (DEP) prevents user to print a
test page from local printer properties? I just noticed that DEP kills
Explorer.exe when trying to print test page to local printer. Network
printers work as usual. Since I don't consider this behaviour very dangerous
can this be fixed somehow? Like newer printer drivers etc?

Thanks

No , DEP is not preventing users from printing .DEP is not killing
explorer.exe

DEP(Data Execution Prevention) is a security setting in Windows XP SP2 which
helps a lot .What it does is to stop a file being executed when it comes from
another computer(e.g. internet) .You download EXE file 9.88 Mb .This file is
trojan hourse but you don't know and want to be protected. This will prevent
it from running unless you answer Windows you do want to run it.If you have
antivirus,it will detect it before you try to open it and this you'll
understand you should delete it.
This is DEP-simple but working and there is no way how it can do the things
you explain. The problem is somewhere else...If you cannot find it,reinstall
Windows.

Not in the slightest bit correct I'm afraid. It can indeed do what the OP
describes and your advice to reinstall Windows is therefore dangerous.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

Yes, this could very well be a fault with the printer drivers, I'd try newer
drivers and also speak to the support people for the printer manufacturer to
see if this is an issue they already know about - they may have a work
around you can try (though, I'd be suspicious of any workarounds that
disable DEP on your whole system).

Thanks for your replies. Especially the one to re-install windows :)

Does DEP require some spesific processor or memory architecture? The problem
occurred when we changed our PC's to newer ones from different manufacturer.
(+3yrs newer). The test page printing worked normally with the same software
setup in the old PC's.

Thanks

Yes it does. The new processors from AMD and Intel all support it these
days, and its a new thing I guess that started to appear.. ummm 18 months or
a year ago, I forget exactly... these days I'd expect it to be on just about
any new machine.
