DEP closing WinMail

I recently set up Windows Mail to work with my email server. All was working
fine until I got an ActiveX error. I went into Mail Tools and changed the
security settings. Now when I open Windows Mail DEP closes it. You can't
turn off or disable DEP for mail, and mail won't stay open long enough to go
back into tools and change the security settings. Then I tried system
restore, which won't work either. After trying three restore points I get
the same error (Sytem Restore did not complete-your computer was not changed).
I can't uninstall Windows Mail to start over.
Any suggestions? Also, I'm no expert, so please be very elementary.
Thanks.

To access DEP controls:
START | right click on My Computer and select Properties.
Click om Advanced System Settings
Coick on Advanced tab
Click on Settings button under Performance
Data Execution Protection tab

If you need further on this, post to the Vista general or other newsgroup
since DEP would be more disccussed there..

That won't help the OP since you can't disable DEP for 'essential'
Windows programs, which includes WinMail.exe.
I would suggest reinstalling Vista over itself, since (I've been told)
that preserves existing data.

Not for sure that why I suggested they go elsewhere for help and just told
them the location of where to make the changes. How and what will help
they'll have to find out elsewhere since it's not (and it's hard for me to
say this), not a Windows Mail issue.

I also would never suggest reintalling over itself. Why preserve a possible
problem when the same amount of time used could be done to do a clean
install. Think of it this way, you charge a client $30 an hour and you're
looking for a problem and spend four hours and come to the conclusion that a
reinstall is needed. How happy do you ythink they are going to be to get a
bill for 6 hours of work and only the last two actually accomplished
anything? That may work well for BestBuy and such but not for me.
