It there a way how to restrick/deny outlook express from sending a excel
file as an
attachment.

It should dený from sending or at least it should as user an affirmation
before sending an .xls file.

Can that be done using windows xp professionals inbuilt settings or should i
install some additional application.

Thank You in advance.

I'm not aware of a way natively within Windows / OE to block SENDING certain
attachments.

If you are in a work environment that has an Internet email gateway [to do
virus scanning, for example], and you are only concerned about XLS files
being sent out to the Internet, you may be able to configure the gateway to
block outbound XLS files out to the Internet. How to do that would depend
on what gateway you're using.

Most people block OE from being able to RECEIVE attachments. Is there a
reason why you need to block the ability to send .XLS attachments, and that
blocking the ability to receive XLS files is not sufficient?

If you wanted to block the ability to receive such files, check out these
articles:

.... and on XP SP2, the AES function can also be used to block the ability to
receive XLS files, somewhat more reliably:

Thank You Karl for a quick answer.
We have in the company all our offer calculations in excel and all offer
documents for the customers in word.
There has rise a fear that someone sometimes might send an offer calculation
(classified) by mistake to our customer in case of offer letter.
There is usually no need of sending excel files and if so then we could zip
such a file.

We don't have an access to the gateway.

I don't exactly know if this product can handle restricting when _sending_.

And of course this is for outlook, not for outlook express.
