NTFS What the?

I have a folder (X) on my server which holds a number of
Sub folders. In these sub folders I have a number of Excel
Documents.

I need to allow people to make changes to these Excel
documents and save those changes. However I need to Deny
those users the ability to delete the files or folders
with the folder (X).

For this group I set the following NTFS permissons. I
assigned Modified. I then go into the Advanced option and
remove the allow delete check box.

When user then try and delete the file they are anable
(good). However when they go to save the document Excel
hang and creates a temp file (BAD).

Does anybody know how to sort out this issue??

I don't believe there is a way. Well, my experience with Office 2000 is
that Excel should not hang if it does not have the delete permission... it
should work fine, except that you'll get lots of temp files accumulating in
that folder that can't be deleted. I would expect Office XP should work the
same way. Not sure why your Office is hanging, it shouldn't.

Cheers mate, I am stuck on the anchient but reliable
office 97 due to internal apps. I will work around the
situation. Much appreciated.

That's OK, I don't think upgrading to a newer version of Office would help
one bit with this problem. [Well, it might get Office 97 to stop hanging
entirely in this scenario.] It's just the way Office works.
