I have set up a folder on our network which is to store
reference material which we do not want employees to be
able to edit, copy to disc, 'save as' to any other
location. These documents should be viewable and
printable ONLY.
I set the security permissions on this folder for "Read"
and deselected all others (ie: Full control, modify,
write... etc.). Although this fulfills most requirements,
it still allows one to 'save as'.
Is there any way to prevent people from being able to copy
the file or 'saving as' another location?
Thanks very much

Hi Mercedes,

There is a technology called Windows Rights Management that could do what
you need. The problem is that it is not necessary easy to implement.

WRM also allows you to specify what pages users can read (e.g. only 5-11 out
of 130 pages), which page they may edit (e.g. only 7 and 9), are they
allowed to print document or which page may they print, what days they are
allowed to see the content, are they allowed to copy this document
anywhere -- and even if they are successful with copy operation to e.g. USB
device they won't be able to open this document on any other PC.

With standard security settings as soon as you give user read permissions
there is nothing you can do to prevent them from saving document to another
location or copy it's content (in one way or another).

With the possible exception of Windows Rights Management, there is no easy
way to prevent this on any operating system. If you can read it, you can
copy it or save it.
