Help! Dennis is headed right at us (I live in the Caymans) and I am trying to
backup my hard drive. My XP home edition came loaded on the pc and I need to
install the backup tool. Is it in the recovery disk and can I install it from
there (or will inserting the disk be a HUGE mistake?)

Ntbackup.msi is usually located in this folder on the
installation CD:

\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

If you don't find it on your recovery CD, you can download the
file here:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm#backup_home

Keep in mind that this program cannot backup directly to a CD.
You will have to store the file on your hard drive and then
burn it to a disc.

That said, Windows Backup program is not the best choice when
considering backup options. I understand the urgency but once
the crisis has passed you might want to develop a better
strategy. If the files on your computer are a valuable asset
that you can't afford to lose you might want to invest in an
external USB hard drive and imaging software such as Norton
Ghost or Acronis True Image.

Good luck

Backup is installed automatically on XP Professional, but not on
XP Home. If you have the complete XP Home CD, find backup on the
CD, in \ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by
doubleclicking the file ntbackup.msi.

If you only have a recovery disk, and not an XP installation CD,
you can download ntbackup.msi at

http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

Option #2
Unplug your computer?

If you have a recovery CD which contains an image of your HDD as it left the
factory, then no, you can't.

You CAN however, download the file from here:
