I am setting up a brand new 2000 server and am going to create a new domain
and remove the old NT domain (it wasn't setup correctly to begin using just
'DOMAIN' as the domain name). How can I move the old NT server over to the
new domain and demote it from a Domain Controller to just a server in the
domain. We want to use the old server for VPN file access.

Thanks!!!

There's no native or supported method to 'demote' a WinNT DC to a plain ole
server, sorry.

Well, I guess it could be a DC in a 2000 environment, just not a Primary?

You can promote a backup domain controller (BDC) to a domain controller (DC)
not reverse.
You need to reinstall the NT server to be a BDC.

That's what I was afraid of...oh well. I knew there were isssues with
demoting NT, but thought I might be able to trick it by putting it in a new
domain.

Thanks for the help!

If you upgrade the server to W2K you can then use DCPromo to change it
from a DC to a member server, but it retains the old domain name.
Server 2003, if an option for you, allows a domain to be renamed, in
W2K you need to remove AD and reinstall AD to do this.
