Hi agen
I was wondering if you can demote the first DC (original
one first built) after a second one has had all the FSMO's
and Global Catalogue to a second DC?
Does cause their roles to swap?

Or do i risk loosing the domain?

Thanks for any help

Alex

Best wait for a few days and check that AD really things
the FSMO roles are still transfered. DO NOT FORGET TO
TRANSFER THE DNS PRIMARY TO THE NEW SERVER TOO OR YOU ARE
DONE FOR THERE IS NO WAY TO REMAKE DNS. What about DHCP
etc too.

Then back a full backup of both servers before you do it.

I've done this after a server failure when I had to seize
everything, I then had to use NTDSUTIL to get rid of then
old server.

Cheers Chris

I have transfered the DNS and DHCP aswell, just need to
clarify that once the FSMO roles are transfered does the
one they were transfered from then get seen as not the
orginal DC and the domain wont be wiped out if the orginal
is demoted to a member server.

No that should be fine but don't forget those backs if
you have the facilities, if not make a system state
backup to a local hard drive file.
