Dell Tape Drives

My Dell drive is stuck flashing "cleaning". When I run a backup it just
keeps trying to access the drive, and conaequently drains the system
dry of resources. Could it just need a cleaning or is this flashing the
sign of a defect?
 
Well, cleaning it would be the most obvious thing that any moron could
do. Unfrotunately, I don't qualify for moron status because I haven't
cleaned it yet! This company didn't even own a cleaning tape until I
bought one yesterday! I'll try cleaning it and see what I get. It'll
probably fix the problem!

One thing about me is that I take the ridiculousaly simple and make it
complex! :(

Well, I cleaned the drive without a problem. Unfortunately, the thing
is still acting up. The light doesn't come out that it needs a
cleaning, but when the backups start the drive starts acting up and
crashes the server. I guess the drive is defective.
