Dell rescaling

I'm using a Dell 21" display on XP. As I do different things, e.g.,
move windows around, navigate to different websites, and selecting all
the cells in an excel spreadsheet, the display image (the entire
desktop) will shrink and then re-expand. It's not a huge amount but
easily noticeable and distracting.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be and what I can do to
address it?

TIA,
David

Yours is not a Windows issue.
Possibilities:
1. Video card driver corrupt / incorrect
2. Video card going bad
3. Monitor going bad
4. Video cable connection loose at monitor or at video card.

3. Monitor going bad

This used to be a common problem on CRTs (and cheap TVs) that had
under-sized power supplies. When the screen went all white the supply in the
monitor didn't have the guts to keep the screen at full size, too. This was
more likely when the line voltage was low, say under 112 VAC. (It's been too
long for me to remember, but Zenith had a spec for such things)

If this is a CRT, and it's under warranty, send it back. If it's an LCD,
call Dell and have them sort it out. Might help to actually measure the
shrinkage with a ruler.

thanks for the info. It's a CRT and I bought it used so it's probably
just ready for the junk heap.

Maybe not just yet.....turn the brighness down and the effect will be less
noticeable. If you turn down the ambient lighting in the room, you can
probably handle less CRT brightness somewhat better. Lower resolutions will
also reduce power consumption, and maybe reduce the effect as well.
