Dell Computer with SATA controller and drive

I may be getting a computer from a friend Dell 8600 I think. SATA
controller with 40gb drive. I will probably upgrade to a 160 gb drive.


Some simple questions:

Can you attach more than one drive to SATA cable (I do not have PC to
look at)?


If I add a floppy where do I connect this to in the Dell?

Finally is there a board I can add to plug in my ATA IDE drive as well
to transfer data over? I guess I could just use a hub or cross over
cable and my current PC.


Thanks for any advice to these basic questions.

Patty,

A SATA cable supports a single drive.

Once you find the correct model number (I believe that there is no 8600
desktop yet), visit support.dell.com.

For example, you can get information on the Dimension 8400:

It has four SATA connectors. There's a single PATA (parallel ATA) connector,
which (I presume) supports the usual two devices.

It has a floppy controller, so you could add a floppy drive if you wish.

Data cable connects to the mobo's floppy interface & drive mounts in a
free external 3.5" or 5.24" bay- unless that model doesn't have these.
Big surprise.
