bought a dell 1100 printer recently; ad says 2000 pages per cartridge

i am getting not even half that yield doing nothing but regular typed
letters (no images, or other ink heavy use)

at $ 64/cartridge that comes to at least 6 cents/page...2x copiers cost
per page

any suggestions how to reduce cost? discount cartidges or buy another
printer that will have better operating cycle costs?

i think dell is misrepresenting its copy costs at 2000 pages, that
claim is based ona '5% coverage' .... how many typewritten pages are
only 5% coverage ? no pages I know of, except the title page of a
report

appreciate any suggesions and please cc any postings to
netcommuner at yahoo dot com also

Are you talking of the roiginal cartidge that came with the printer (in
which cas a reduced capacity isn't unheard of), or replacement carts?

IMO, give 3rd pary refilled carts a try, if not refill yourself.

If you want to switch printers, consider Canon, as they are, IMO, most
amicable to refilling and 3rd party carts. If you can, get a x000 series
(rather than the x200, as those use chipped carts, although it lets you
use refilled carts).

Text actually has very sparse coverage, and 5% coverage pages are more common
than you would think. I do not know about Dell's reporting, but one thing you
might check is the page size. I have seen some cases where a manufacturer
reported page coverage based on a 8.5"x11" page with one inch borders all
around. The resulting 5% page of 6.5"x9" is a bit over 3% of a full page.
