I downloaded this a few days ago, don't see it on ACF right now.

It deletes index.dat as well as other cleaning.

Has anyone used this cleaner utility? and results?

Sorry, should have included this:
---------------------
Delindex.bat
Renaissance Man
(e-mail address removed)
http://www.burzurq.com/forum/delindex.html
Index.dat files, containing the Web surfing history, grow until they
cause performance issues with surfing. The program also deletes junk
files. The download is a .bat file, which needs to go in the top level
directory of c:\. "Type c:\delindex" (sans quotes) from any drive or
folder. You can view its notes from the Web site or open it with a text
editor.
The primary purpose of Delindex is to delete Index.dat files which are
never resized, and only get bigger. These files contain all your web
surfing history since they were (re)created, and large index.dat files
can cause performance issues with browsing.

Yep. Regularly. Seems to do the job okay.

Thanks, John. I'm having a time trying to edit the text file that
represents the screens you see for notes when you run the program. It
has lots of code intermixed in the text.

What about Spider? Another option. 2003 Pricelessware
http://www.fsm.nl/ward/

More cleaning with one of Langa's utilities, clean9x.bat... also one for
win2000 and XP

Perhaps I missed something BUT IIRC I simply used it "as is".

When I run it, data screens detail what it does, that file on his site
has lots of DOS code intermixed in the text. I want to review the text
to see what the program does. I'm looking into how to clean it so I can
read it.

Mike, I looked at the 32k delindex.bat file and also the 2.4 meg
IDSuite. Here's another small, freeware, no-install alternative.

The package contains three files:
readme.txt (1140 bytes) - This file
dellater.asm (3417 bytes) - Assembly source code
dellater.exe (2560 bytes) - Program file

For more security software, visit our website:
http://www.diamondcs.com.au

I placed dellater.exe in the root. In the run box I type
c:\dellater C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat
A screen then announced the file is marked for deletion on the next
boot. Win Patrol came up, as expected, with its usual warning that
wininit.ini been designated to run on the next boot. I rebooted and
then read the index.dat in my editor and the sites previously indicated
were gone as index.dat was just blank spaces. It worked fine.

Of course any file 'in use' can be deleted by using this little exe.

Delindex is a little too automatic.

This diamondcs.com site has other useful utilities also.

Spider gives a very nice scan, but it can't do anything for IE later
than 5.0. I have 5.01SP2 and the help file says it won't work for that.
Too bad it wasn't developed, it sure scans nicely.

It is only that the help contents was not updated. I believe it works
for Win98 IE5.x, IE6.x, based on its behaviour. It won't work if in
the registry you move the Temporary Internet Files to another drive or
location. I use IE5.01sp2 like you do. Below what it did on restarting
my computer. I was able to get this because I did not run Spider in
silent mode and on restart highlighted everything in the black dos box
and copied to clipboard. The reason it failed on the cookies index.dat
is because I started in DOS and deleted it myself playing around. To
manually delete index.dat files, do this: restart, tap the F8 key every
2 seconds until you see boot-up choices, choose "dos prompt only" (on my
puter it's F8 as well as many others, may be something else for yours).
Now you are in DOS, you can delete whatever you want.

Thanks, Spacey.
My Temporary Internet Files folder is in the normal Windows default
location.
In Options, I checked everything and unselected Silent Mode.
I scanned, copied the list to Clipboard, keyed Cleanup, restarted,
scanned again, looks like no change at all. All the IE history is still
there.

What's missing here?
I assumed Cleanup runs Spiderbite.exe, and that does it.

Correct assumption. Spiderbite runs when you restart the computer.
When you restart, and because you did not select silent mode, you will
see a black box before login. In order to proceed to login, you will
have to close the box. If you highlight the contents of this box, and
copy it to the clipboard, you will get something like this:

I found the problem, got back here and saw your post. I use
RegistryProt, so when Spider runs the first time, it adds a key to
registry. I kept refusing the key. That was the problem. This time I
accepted the key, and it works fine. Just as you say, I see the Bite
screen on restart.

All I have left in the log file now is:
Scanned C:\WINDOWS

C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat

I assume this says it works as intended.

So as you said, at the DOS prompt, I'll look at those dat files. As
seldom as I use IE, and a small HD, too much baggage.

Spacey, I forgot to add- we both use IE 5.01SP2. I use it because I
seldom use IE, and later 5.5/6 are bigger, no advantage to me as I was
always a Netscape user. I only use it with some pages that
Netscape/Firebird won't handle.

Why do you stay with IE 5.01?

That's a good question. I will eventually move to IE6.0 because I
figure web designers will make sure pages work on IE6.0 before anything
else. *sigh* I've been told MS improved some CSS handling in IE6.
I've been holding off on changing because IE5.01sp2 has been running
quite smoothly on my machine, I have 6 BHO's to deal with if I
upgrade.... It's like I'm running a Millenium Falcon... used to be
cargo vessel, but it's been vamped.
