What, if any effect would deleting an icon from the quick Launch portion of
the taskbar have on that particular program?

.Nothing, it's a short cut. You can always access it by
going to start and then programs and it'll be there. I
like to have icons there for programs I use alot(one
click instead of three to open a program). You can place
an icon there(or put one back) by right clicking a
program from the programs list and sending it to your
desktop. from the desktop, you'll need to drag it from
the desktop and place it on the quck launch bar (I know
this works for 98, but not xp) That's one thing I do not
like about xp hope this helps, dv..

Dragging a shortcut from the desktop to the Quicklaunch bar DOES work under
XP. However, dragging a shortcut with the left-mouse button will put a copy
on the Quicklaunch bar, while dragging with the right-mouse button will
popup a menu allowing you to either copy or move the shortcut to the
Quicklaunch bar.

Thanks much Donald. If I may, another QL question: how would I get the icons
I have here to stay put where they are? The Taskbar is always locked but
after every re-boot there are some that tend to wander off to another
position...any thoughts or suggestions?

I really don't my friend. The Taskbar on Windows XP is sometimes very
strange.

You can reposition your icons anyway you want them. Just put the mouse
pointer on an icon on the QuickLaunch that you want to move, and click and
drag it to the position you want it. There will be a black vertical line
showing where you can put it.

By the way, are you referring to the icons on the QuickLaunch bar (on the
left side of the Taskbar by the Start button, or the icons which are in the
Notification Area on the right side of the Taskbar, by the clock? I have
never seen the icons on the QuickLaunch bar move around, but the icons in
the Notification Area can and do move around. The only way I have been able
to get them to not move around is to individually customise their display
state.

To do this,
1) Right-click on the arrow just to the left of the icons in the
Notification area.
2) Choose "Properties" from the popup menu.
3) Click on the "Taskbar" tab.
4) Make sure "Hide inactive icons" is checked.
5) Click on "Customize" under "Notification Area".
6) For each icon in the list of "Current Items", under "Behavior"
right-click and choose the state you want each icon to always be in from the
pull-down list which will be displayed. You can choose "Always hide" or
"Always show"

Again, thanks Donald.

The icons I'm referring to are indeed on the QuickLaunch portion of the
Taskbar, as opposed to the System Tray. Not a crucial,
I-need-to-have-it-this-way-or-else situation by any stretch, but it is
rather vexing at times when they (actually, only one that really has this
tendency, the 'Show Desktop') wander off.

Hmmm...I just counted 27 of them. Do you suppose that number has anything to
do with it?

I don't know. I have 12 icons on my QuickLaunch bar. They are always in
the places I put them originally. Never seen them move around.
