Deleting user accounts

When I first started to set up my WinXP Pro on my new machine, it had user
accounts for Administrator, All Users, Me and Hubby. Then I started to
install other programs like Office. Now I have those accounts plus
Administrator.Office, All Users.Office, Me.Office and Hubby.Office. I had
trouble with the Office install, and as a result I now have those accounts,
plus others ending in Office001 and Office002. Now, my question is, can I
delete the older user accounts? I use the most recently created accounts,
but the list is really long and I would like to clean it up. I would set a
restore point, but would really hope this step would be unnecessary.
Thanks!

Alice - you should not need separate user accounts for each application -
why/how did you set them up? Once the application is installed you can
decide who 'sees' the application in their own All Programs list by right
clicking the <start> and <explore>. From here you can move the shortcut to
<all users> or to any individual user.
If this has not helped, please post some more details.

Rod, I did not create these user accounts. I started with the basic ones -
Administrator, mine and my husbands. I don't know how or when the others
appeared, but they are all the basic ones with an extension of dot Office or
dot Office001. It appears that the installation of Office for XP may have
done this. I had problems with the install and perhaps that's how they were
created. It appears as if the 001 and 002 versions of the user accounts are
back ups. I just need to know if it's ok to delete the older versions. I
hope this makes sense. Thanks for your help!

Look at the CD that you're using to install Office very carefully. Does it
say Office XP or Windows XP?

The extra accounts that you're accumulating (and the naming sequence) is
normally created when Windows is installed over itself.

I have not reinstalled Windows. I have installed Office XP several times
due to the install bombing. I used the correct CD. I am not so much
interested in why they were created as much as knowing if it is ok to delete
them.

Alice, you can find out which account folders are current using this
method:

Log on with an account.

Click Start> Run> and type in
%userprofile%

Click OK

Windows Explorer will open with the focus on the user account folder that
belongs to the person that is currently logged on.

Check the contents of the old folders. Grab anything that you need.
Then use Control Panel> User Accounts to remove the unwanted accounts.

Thank you very much!
