deleting trash

When I choose "empty deleted items" from the menu, it does not empty the
folder after asking if I'm sure I want to delete the items and I chose "yes"

Make sure you have Vista's SP1 or SP2 installed.
If that is OK, try running the various repair functions in the WMUtil program:

If still no improvement, upgrade to Windows Live Mail:
