Thanks to your advice, I've stopped IE caching thumbnails, and deleted every
thumbs file in my computer. I'm still having problems when publishing,
however. I'm using DWT and I can't acces the individual page files on the web
to delete the thumbs. I'm having to tell FP to ignore these files to publish.
As always, your advice is invaluable and very much appreciated.

Don't understand
If you can select the file to mark it Do Not Publish, you can obviously also delete it

After any changes to the content of a FP web outside of FP (like deleting all thumbs.db in Windows)
- always run a Tool Recalculate hyperlinks in FP

Also since you have had publish failures clean out your FP web cache files
In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache
