My temporary internet folder in Doucuments and
Settings/User/Local Settings shows no folders and no
files. However, when I right click on the folder and
click on properties it shows there are 21 folders and
thousands of files. I want to delete these files but I
don't know where they are, how to get to them and how to
delete them.

I have turned off "hide protected operatiing system
files" and have set "Show hidden files and folders under
Folder Options.

Help would be appreciated.

Hi

You can delete those files from in Internet Explorer - Tools>Internet Options... - then click on 'Delete Files...' and check the box to 'Delete all offline content'. You can then click on 'Delete Cookies...'.

The only files I can find after the clearing out are 6 'desktop.ini' files, which I normally leave in-place anyway - total space 402 bytes. I don't know what is taking up 7.15 Mbs.

what you're not seeing, are files that are collected in
the IE5 contents folder which, for some reason, Windows XP
doesn't show in Windows Explorer, including a .dat file
that records every website you've visited. My guess is
some of the folders that are left are sizable, and also
the .dat file is probably a few mb's big itself by now. i
run a dual boot system with 98se and XP home. i access
the files in 98se using Windows Explorer, and delete them
there. so anyways, thats what you're not seeing, but they
are there. maybe someone here has an idea how to make xp
show those files, because setting the folder view to "show
all files" doesn't do it.

also...for future reference, an "empty" TIF should have 7
files and 5 folders...and any size on it will be
attributed to the size of the .dat file which is just a
list of the websites you've been to. a clean .dat file is
about 32.3 bytes big. you can delete the .dat file, it
will re-create a new clean file next time you boot up.
most of the files you'll find in there will be mostly ads
and gif's and jpegs...mostly all junk from banners and
ads...at least thats what mine collects, even after i've
deleted my files in internet explorer. for some reason,
Content.IE5 collects them. why IE6 in XP even HAS a
Content.IE5 folder hidden in it's temporary internet file,
is a mystery to me, but it's there, and it works, and i
empty it using windows explorer when i'm booted up in 98se.

Will, thanks for the info.

What is your purpose in running both XP and 98se?
Which one do you like better?(and why)

I am thinking of upgrading to XP home from 98se.
Just trying to gather some info to make my decision.

thanks
Jim
