Deleting Temperary Internet Files

(1) I have my windows 98 SE computer (with Internet Explorer 6x) always set
to delete all temporary internet files each time the computer is shut down.
So I'm always expecting that's what's happening. Today, while uninstalling
programs and manually cleaning out unnecessary files, I came across a folder
called IE5\Temporary Internet files and there was 20 MB of files in it,
dated from 2001 to the present). I previously used IE 5. Looks like when IE
6 installed, it didn't change the name of the folder, nor establish its own
folder. Can I fix that so the computer knows where the temporary internet
files really are?

(2) I went in to manually delete the files, and as normal, the first ones
are numbered 01, 02, 03, etc. There are assorted stray files with just
names, not all with a .tmp files extension; but what puzzles me in each of
the kpsxyxm-type folders, there are *many* that are named ZIP01, ZIP02,
ZIP03 etc. When I go in to manually delete temporary internet files, can
I delete everything under the folder called "Temporary Internet Files" that
I've described above, or do I need to leave the kpsxyxm-type folders there
and just delete the files within? and when did they start naming the files
ZIP...?

Hi,
You may have found the Content.IE5 folders located in the Temporary Internet
Files folder. But, regardless, it won't hurt to delete everything and get a
fresh start.

For Win98
Restart in Ms-Dos Mode
From C:\> (type and press Enter after each command)

cd\windows
smartdrv
deltree tempor~1

Restart via Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Also recommended:
Set the size of the TIF folder to about 50-60 MB.
When clearing the TIF from Internet Options> General... check the "Delete
offline content" box when that dialog pops up.

Hope this helps,
Don

It is a relief to have some of you folks really helping us to keep things
cleaned up and working. Thank you so much!

That turned out beautifully!
Can you give me (under cd\windows) what I type to do the same thing for the
TEMP files?

Sure. It's also safe to delete the History and Temp folders.

For Win98
Restart in Ms-Dos Mode
From C:\> (type and press Enter after each command)

cd\windows
smartdrv
deltree tempor~1
deltree history
deltree temp

Restart via Ctrl-Alt-Del

Occasionally, the Temp folder won't be recreated on restart. You can simply
create one in the proper directory. Probably [C:\WINDOWS\TEMP]
