Deleting "Printing" Documents

I am running Windows XP Home Edition. The first document
I try to print in any given session usually hangs up and
a message window appears indicating that my scanner
cannot be identified. When I go to the control panel to
see what is going on it tells me the document
is "printing." When I "cancel" it (though other
documents that may be in the queue disappear promptly)
the "printing" document may take up to half an hour to
clear, meanwhile tieing up thr printer. Needless to say
this is very frustrating. What, if any, is the cure for
this? (Once the offending document does cleas, the
scanner is either identified without further
intervention or is readily identified with thr probe
utility, ad no further problem arises until the next time
the computer is restarted.)
