deleting pages from remote server

The remote server still has pages that I've deleted from
the local web, even after I've published many times. I've
tried both methods of publishing (changed pages only, or
all pages) and they're still out there on the Internet.
Tech support from my ISP says I need to get an FTP program
and delete them manually from their server. Is this
true? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

If you are publishing the web over FTP, then yes, using a third-party FTP
program will give you much more control over the files on the server as you
can interactively login and delete files. When FP publishes with FTP it is
doing more of a dump than anything else. Old files often get left behind
because FP doesn't have the same file management capabilities that it has
when connecting to a web server running the FP Server Extensions.

If you publish over http though, it means that the web server has the FP
Server Extensions installed and instead of connecting to the web site
through an FTP program, you can use FP by using File | Open Web and entering
the URL you normally publish to (like http://www.mysite.com). This will
directly connect to the web server and you can delete files just as if it
was your local web.

Hope this helps,

Mark,
Thank you! I had no idea I could connect directly to
their server with my password!!! I went in and deleted
the old pages. Thanks for the clearly-worded advice. God
bless you!!!!!!! (c:

you need to physically delete them from the remote server with FTP or Telnet or
whatever you use.....(if you use the FP publish feature, this is only for
publishing, not fully accessing the remote machine.....I don't believe you can
actually view the content of the remote server, although this would be a handy
feature - to have a sort of FTP utility built in, other than just the publish
feature that is currently part of Frontpage.
