I have never used Messenger but recently have started to
receive popup ads that appear every 5 minutes or so and
that state for $29.95 I can fix it so that no popup ads
will ever appear. How can I delete the messenger program
from my hard disk which I assume would then eliminate
these popup ads.

Greetings JLB,

What you're seeing is the Messenger service built-in to Windows, *not* Windows Messenger
(which are two different things) which spammers are exploiting -- this is not Microsoft, nor
can Microsoft control them anymore then they can control spam to your e-mail inbox.

To get rid of these pop ups, you'll need to disable the "Messenger Service", click Start,
then Run, enter "services.msc"and click OK. Scroll down to "Messenger", select it,
right-click and then choose Properties. Under startup type, choose 'Disabled' and then
choose the 'Stop' button. After the service is stopped, click OK. Nothing in Windows or any
real third-party applications should be effected by this.

i think i can answer your question (see below), but i
have another one--how can you reinstall messenger if
you've gone ahead, in fact, and deleted it.

now, re an answer to the question that's been asked--
walter mossberg's "mailbox" column in today's (aug 7)
wall street journal described how to "disable" messenger.
his instructions were to click successively on:
1)start
2) control panel
3) administrative tools
4) services
5)messenger
6) when the tabbed window opens, chose the "general" tab
7) on the "option" called starup type, clikc on the arrow
at the right for a list of choices
8) select "disabled" and then close all the other windows
you've opened by clicking x in the upper right hand
corner.

i followed those steps up until the last one where i
chose to "delete" instead of disable.

i worry that i've made a mistake since i now can't get
access to messenger at all and would like to reinstall
it. does anyone know how to do that?

Jonathan,
I appreciate your informative response to the
previous question and have two follow-up questions of my
own:

1) Have I damaged my computer by uninstalling rather than
simply disabling Messenger? I am most worried here about
possibly no longer being able to receive automatic XP
updates from Microsoft.

2) How do I go about reinstalling Messenger if you think
that is what I should do?

Much thanks,
James

Hi James,

1. Not at all -- remember however that if you removed 'Windows Messenger' -- this has
nothing to do with the pop-ups.

2. Assuming you removed Windows Messenger, which will have no effect on these pop-ups, you
can reinstall Windows Messenger here:

Found your response to my earlier post, thanks for the
response. My only remaining question is
which 'messenger' is so frantically attempting to access
the internet a hundred time a day?

Hi hylski Try this

For Norton Antivirus 2003, open Norton Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton
Antivirus icon in
the System Tray/Notification Area (by the clock), choose 'Open Norton
Antivirus'), click
Options, then Instant Messenger then uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click
OK.
