I saw this posted on another thread:

You DON'T have to use Bill Manville's FindLink utility. The task can be done
by hand. FindLink just makes it easier.

I asked how to accomplish this task manually in Excel 97 or 2K?, but nobady
answered. Is there anyone that can answer this question.

Edit>Links will show you what workbooks you are linked to.

If not available, perhaps you have some names in Insert>Name>Define that
refer to other workbooks.

These will not show up under Edit>Links.

The linked file exists on another pc not in my possesion or control. The
only named range is a print range.

Try Edit>Find

what: [

Look in Formulas

Anything?

Or CTRL + `(backquote) to toggle formula view.

Have a look at all formulas for any references to another book.

That is a neat short cut, but all the formulas are within the same
worksbbook, many of them are referencing the previous worksheet.
When selecting "yes" to updating the links it shows a totaly different
woorbook, with none of the worksheetsin that list in the current workbook
that I'm opening. That workbook must be on the other pc.
That pc has Vista where mine runs XP, do you think it may have to do with
the way Visata saves compatible files?

Thanks for the link, but that doesn't solve my problem of deleting links from
the workbook sent me.

Did you use the name manager to look through the names to see if there were any
links there?

Did you look through any charts to see if the series contained any links (or
names with links) to other files?

Links to worksheets within the same workbook will not raise an "update
links" message.

Only links to other workbooks will do that.

I suggest you use Dave's advice to employ the findlink addin
