When I delete an attachment that is 1 meg and save the
text message, why is the size of the message still the
same size. The attachement is gone and when I forward a
copy of the message, the size of the e-mail that they
receive is 1 k?

Thanks

The size will not change until you compact the pst file.
If you are connecting to an exchange server and the
file/folder is in your exchange mailbox, then a network
admin must run this on the exchange server.

If you are using internet email, then you need to go to
the properties of your mailbox, click on folder size and
then the compact button.

After you run compact the new size will show up.

This is not true. The changed message size should be visible immediately.

Is the message size displayed still the same after you refresh the folder or
close and restart Outlook? What kind of connection are we talking any way?
Exchange, POP3, HTTP, IMAP? and what version of Outlook?

I thought it took a restart of the Exchange server if that
is being used in this case.

when you delete an attachment from a message and *save* the message, the
size of the message is the actual size of the message. if you delete the
attachment but don't save it, its not deleted and the message size remains
the same.
