I use IE6 on XP Home. I clicked 'clear history' on the Internet Options,
General tab . Yet, when I begin to type into the address bar, a series of
entries, all beginning with the first keystroke, drops down. Where is this
list stored, and how can I delete it?

See if this helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/157729/en-us
"How to clear the History entries in Internet Explorer".
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260897/en-us
"How to Delete the Contents of the Temporary Internet Files Folder".

Try also...
CCleaner (freeware), from http://www.ccleaner.com/
About CCleaner, courtesy of Sandi Hardmeier - Microsoft MVP: "Be very very
VERY careful with CCleaner. We are seeing a lot of problems with that
software removing hotfix data making it impossible to uninstall IE7 and any
other hotfix/update."

And...
Free History Eraser (deletes also index.dat files):
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm

The History folder can be deleted manually:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Then set your IE cache (TIF folder size) at about 50/60 mb (Internet
options -> Settings).

My problem is just the opposite. I'm not writing anything to the history
file. This just started today. For some reason when I visit anyplace it
doesn't write it to the history file. Any ideas please?????

The history is different from the typed addresses. You want to delete
"Internet Explorer Typed URLs". I do it via a third-party program that does
other things I want, so I don't recall how else to do it. You can probably
find it on a Web search under that term, though!

Autocomplete works off the index.dat file in your History folder. You'll
have to manually delete that folder to get that super-hidden index.dat file
if it's not cleared via Internet Options.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm - basically, you'll have to log
in to Windows from another profile with Admin. privileges to manually delete
that folder.

You can turn this feature off in two places - Tools...Internet
Options...Content tab, Autocomplete, uncheck "web addresses", and on the
Advanced tab, Browsing section, uncheck "use inline autocomplete".

In classic view, Start > Settings > Task Bar & Start Menu... > Advanced >
Clear (button)
