Deleting from Server

I have "leave a copy of message on server" and
then "remove from server when deleted from deleted items"
checked. Often upon exiting OUTLOOK, my messages are NOT
deleted from server. In addition, at times, although a
message is in my inbox, when I check mail later, I get a
duplicate in my inbox. Thanks a lot!

As well, once I download my new messages and leave them
in my Inbox, when I download my messages again, I get a
second, then third copy of them...

I posted this note before, but when searching can find
the note, yet can't see the thread. When going back
through the newsgroup pages, I can't find it!

What version of Outlook are you using and have you installed any updates for
it?

It should have been fixed then. Are you using a dial-up connection? If so
try closing Outlook (and make sure the outlook.exe process isn't running
anymore by using the Taskmanager) before you disconnect from the Internet.

I'm not on a dial up connection, but still have the
problem of INBOX messages being duplicated until I delete
them...

It appears that, despite Outlook telling the server to delete the message,
the message remains on the server and we download it again. I can't tell
from the logs whether the server actually should have made the deletion,
because there was a design issue in Outlook 2002 that prevented us from
logging the QUIT command that we send to the server, which is when deletions
would be finalized. The three possibilities are that (1) Outlook never
issued the QUIT command for some reason, (2) Outlook issued the QUIT command
but the server responded with an error message, or (3) Outlook issued the
QUIT command, the server responded positively, but for some reason didn't
actually delete the message. I can't distinguish these from the logs (I
fixed the logging in Outlook 2003 so that we could).

Have you installed any service packs? In either SP-1 or SP-2 (I forget
which), we fixed a problem in which the dial-up connection was dropped
before Outlook had a chance to issue the QUIT command, which led to problems
of this sort.

(Please include the text of previous posts when you reply - it makes it much
easier to follow the flow)

Hi Jeff,

I believe we had this issue posted here a week ago as well. Both this poster
and the previous one have all the updates installed (Windows and Office) and
are on a broadband connecion. I believe last weeks poster never responded
with a log.

Regards,
