When I search for files over 1 MB, I have about a zillion of them. My
question is which ones (files ext) are safe to delete?

There are no file extensions that are patently safe to delete. You
need to know what they do, what programs put them there, and why, and
whether they are still being used.

There are good programs out there to help with this process. I *highly
recommend* that you don't delete anything unless you *know* that it is
safe to do so. Many, many windows installations have been killed
because someone deleted a file that they though was superfluous.

Here's a MS link re: cleaning up windows:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone/cleansweep.mspx

Start there, and then see about programs to help the process. Here's a
review from the Inquirer of one such application

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=21964

No idea if it's good or not, never used it myself. There are plenty of
other such apps around.

Anyway, good luck, and be careful.

Depends. You should not delete files in the WINDOWS folder and its
subfolders for system safety reasons. If you talk about data and
program files: check if the data is still necessary or if the related
application is still used on your computer., If no, you can of course
delete the files.
Files in the TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES folder and the TEMP folder can
be deleted in any case. There is no critical data that is stored here.
If in doubt, create a new folder and move the files to the folder to
see what happens when they are no longer at their original location.
Or rename the file.
To find useless data on the disk you can use tools like
Easy Cleaner (http://www.toniarts.com)
jv16 Power Tools (http://www.macecraft.com/)
