Deleting files and folders

I have files and folders I think I want to delete. The
last computer I had; I broke because I deleted
files/folders that I needed. I don't know what I can
delete and what I can't. Is there a way I can find out
which of these I can delete and which I can't?

1. You can search for the name of the file/folder with an Internet
search engine. For most common files you will find some informations
about their purpose here.
2. If in doubt, create a new folder TEST and move the files/folders to
that folder. If this does not cause any problems with Windows or your
applications, the data is not needed.

As a general guide, only delete files and folders that you have created for
your data. That is document files, text files, picture files, music files,
movie files, whatever.
These just contain information that you have saved, and their presence or
removal does not affect how the system runs.
Any program files should be removed using the 'add/remove programs' feature
in the Control Panel.
These contain 'active' files that can affect the way your system performs,
and is best done by Windows own automated process.
Try saving your data files to a location such as the 'my documents' folder -
you can create sub folders to help organise your files.
That way, you should not have to worry that any deleting files will affect
the running of your system.
'When in doubt, don't' is a good rule with PC's.
