When I click on "control panel", "display", then "desktop", I get a list of
my available backgrounds. Someone downloaded some nasty ones in there that I
need to delete. How do I do that?

If you right click on the offending background name does it give you
proprties and then the root to the locations that its stored
If so go to the location that its stored and delete it.

Pictures list - Display Properties Background tab:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/background.htm

Delete the image(s) manually after finding the location.
