I highlight the names I want to delete in autocomplete, but the 'delete'
button does not delete them. Any ideas?

Can you right-click on them and delete?

If there is a single name shown, the delete key won't delete. See if this

Right click highlighted email address.
Manually depress Delete button on keyboard.
Unwanted entry - gone!
